The first half of this biography of America's 16th president traces Lincoln's life from his boyhood through his early political career. The second half takes readers through Lincoln's presidency, the Civil War, and his assassination in 1865. Using quotes from Lincoln's letters, speeches, and other writings as well as from contemporary newspaper accounts, the author takes care to present the facts, rather than the mythical legends, of Lincoln's life. As a result, this is a comprehensive look at not only Lincoln the president, but also Lincoln the man, particularly in terms of his relationship with his wife, Mary Todd.
